The Emergence of the GPS System

The Global Positioning System (GPS) was launched in 1978 and was initially used exclusively by the US military. However, from the late 1980s, GPS became available for civilian use, which revolutionized navigation.

Number of Satellites in a GPS System

A modern GPS system uses 24 satellites, but only 4 satellites are sufficient to obtain accurate data. This network of satellites allows accuracy down to a few meters.

The First Car with Navigation

The first production car with a navigation system was released in 1990 by Toyota. The Toyota Celsior was the first car to incorporate a navigation system that worked with maps and GPS.
